Workshop: Introduction to Sumi Painting

Saturday, May 9, 2-4 p.m. in the BAC Gallery

For ages 8 and up.

Taught by Puget Sound Sumi Artist Lois Yoshida.

Experience the flowing techniques of Japanese sumi painting while exploring a creative form of self-expression. Traditional tools and materials will be used with sumi (ink) as the primary medium for painting images as well as changes in color through tonal value. Learn to simplify visual elements by using minimal brush strokes. You will leave the workshop with a finished painting on handmade paper!

About sumi-e:

Sumi-e is a Japanese, Zen-influenced art form of black ink painting that focuses on capturing the spirit or essence of a subject rather than its photographic appearance. It uses minimal brushstrokes, ink, and paper to create elegant, simple images, often portraying nature through spontaneous, uncorrectable strokes. The name comes from the Japanese words for ink, “sumi,” and painting, “e.” Although it appears simple, sumi-e requires careful control of pressure and ink. The tradition developed over centuries, passing from Japan to China, and became closely tied to religion and philosophy.

About Lois Yoshida:

Lois Yoshida studied with well-known Northwest sumi-e master Fumiko Kimura and master Asian brush calligrapher Mary Shizuka Bottomley. She is past-president of the Puget Sound Sumi Artists organization and currently Education Committee Chair. Her award-winning sumi and Asian brush calligraphy paintings have been exhibited in the Northwest and internationally. She teaches at the Gage Academy of Art and Path With Art in Seattle as well as through her studio in Tacoma and has taught at the Frye Art Museum, Everett Community College, public and private schools, and other public venues.
